FTA Introduces “Effective Date of Change”
Keeping tax records up to date has always been a compliance obligation for businesses registered with the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA). However, a recent enhancement to the EmaraTax portal has placed even greater emphasis on timely reporting by requiring taxpayers to specify the “Effective Date of Change” when updating their tax profile.
While this may appear to be a minor system update, it reinforces an existing legal requirement under the UAE Tax Procedures Law. Businesses that delay notifying the FTA of changes to their tax records may now face increased exposure to administrative penalties.
What Has Changed?
The FTA has introduced a mandatory Effective Date of Change field within the Taxable Person Details Amendment Application on the EmaraTax portal.
When submitting amendments to tax registration details, businesses must now indicate the date on which the change actually became effective. This enables the FTA to monitor whether updates have been submitted within the required notification period.
Understanding the 20 Business Day Rule
Under the UAE Tax Procedures Law, taxable persons are required to notify the FTA of changes to their tax records within 20 business days.
The introduction of the new field strengthens the Authority’s ability to verify compliance with this requirement. Delayed notifications may now be more easily identified during the review process.
Penalties for Late Updates
Failure to notify the FTA within the prescribed timeframe may result in administrative penalties.
Current penalties include:
- AED 1,000 for the first violation.
- AED 5,000 for repeated violations within a 24-month period.
For many businesses, maintaining accurate tax records is therefore becoming just as important as meeting filing and payment obligations.
Review Your Tax Records Regularly
Businesses should regularly review their FTA profile to ensure information remains accurate and current.
Common events requiring updates include:
- Trade licence renewals
- Changes to business activities
- Passport or Emirates ID renewals
- Changes to company information or supporting documentation
Establishing an internal process to monitor these changes can help reduce compliance risks and avoid unnecessary penalties.
